This year so far, viral food trends have included red wine brownies, sweet potato toast, raclette (finally an internet trend we can agree with!) and avocado burger buns. And every year, without fail, we are introduced to a handful of new, bizarre takes on our favourite foods.
We have even seen bottles of wine with a glass attached to the top for easy access to the entire bottle. We get it, you love wine! Now, though, there is a new combination that combines quite possibly two of the best creations on this planet – wine and cheese. Say hello to the Red Wine Cheese Toastie.
Of course, you could call it ‘Grilled Cheese’, but you’d be wrong. Simple but beautiful, the cheese toastie is made of three layers of goodness sandwiched together – bread, cheese and bread – then toasted, or fried in butter. The only thing that could possibly make this better is, quite rightly, the injection of a little red wine.
Naturally, this makes things a little messier in the eating process, but cheese toasties are meant to be messy! If the cheese isn’t oozing out in seductive strings and visible on your chin immediately after eating, it’s not a cheese toastie – it’s just a cheese sandwich. And nobody has time for that.
But let’s get to the red wine part – brother and sister duo Carlene and Bob Deutscher have created the ultimate indulgent toastie for their food blog, BS’ In The Kitchen. Containing gruyere cheese, it’s much more grown up than your bog-standard cheddar variety. It’s also seasoned with red onion, garlic, rosemary and thyme.
